I love watching the Discovery travel and living channel. One of the places I’ve been wanting to visit is Iceland. I admit I have been a huge fan of some of the musicians from Iceland but more than that, I have been mesmerized by some of the landscape photographs I have seen. I was once again enlightened while randomly watching an episode of Discovery’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern where he visits Iceland.

Did you know that 80% of Iceland’s electricity is generated by using hydropower? The remaining 20% is generated by using geothermal power. This translates to zero emissions power!

Andrew Zimmern visited Heilsukostur, a restaurant in Hveragerdi and the only restaurant in the world that operates purely using steam as its sole source of energy. The stream is brought from a near by hot spring through steel pipes at a temperature of 320 degrees Fahrenheit. That means rice is done in 10 minutes!

Iceland does has an advantage from the abundant source of renewable energy that occurs naturally. The island itself is located on the Mid-Atlantic ridge which makes it very active, volcanically. That’s where all the steam comes from! The earth soaks up all the rain and the volcanic activity underground heats the water to create steam.

Iceland is one of few places in the world that have hydrogen retail stations. It’s like any other gas station but instead of filling up with gas, you fill up your hydroelectric vehicle with hydrogen. What comes out of the exhaust pipe? Water!

What: Making bricks using cow dung, abundant in some regions of Indonesia

Why: Cheaper (for the rural producers) while also producing high quality bricks

Earthie why and how: Replaces the use of non-renewable resources (clay and firewood) with a renewable resource (cow dung), also powering the production process (kiln) with biogas (methane). Biogas can be produced using a variety of organic matter, including manure.

Congratulations team. Check out the other brilliant ideas that made it into the final round.

I’ve always been a big supporter of companies being (earthie) creative with their products… giving the consumers the ability to be greener. There are so many products that we use that unless we use less of it, we won’t be able to display our pro-earthie actions. Without policy changes and products that abide by those new policies, all other actions are short term. We need to start thinking about long term solutions. I acknowledge that for a average Joe/Sally-earthie like me, that is difficult, but I can continue to spread the word. So here goes to consumer goods that help us to be greener… just one step at a time.

There were two articles I found interesting to earth-ies on The Economist (which I love) this week. CCS, also known as carbon sequestration, is a technology which isolates carbon dioxide from processes that often produce large quantities (i.e. coal burning) and compresses then pumps it underground. This creates a “storage” system that successfully allows CO2 from being released into the atmosphere… or does it?

1) The illusion of clean coal
2) Trouble in store

Below are three key points I found interesting with the attempted and future implementation of CCS.

I. Does it work? Adequacy of credibility

There is a lot of enthusiasm, even I had been wanting to do a bit of research on CCS. But the optimism is really a product of the idea of possibilites. There is not a single big power plant using the CCS technology in the world. According to the article, Exxon Mobil runs the biggest carbon-capture facility, using the pressure from CO2 pumping into reservoirs to push out more fuel. The two points below really answers this first point.

II. Is it tested? Ambitions outperform reality

If enthusiasm isn’t backed by enough CCS facilities, then how will the industry progress? There seems to be several pilot projects underway but the technology hasn’t been proven because for one, the high cost of CCS is deterring investment (more below) and two, the reports of leakage are not dependable yet. The Economist says that according to Greenpeace, CO2 can react with minerals and materials that house it, thereby leaking at a rate of 1% a year which would lead to 63% of the total CO2 stores… net net? Obviously a lot of work needs to be done in this area of science/technology thereby providing progressively cheaper technology engineering alternatives.

III. Is it cost effective? Interesting note on policy

Currently the expected price range to implement CCS is broad but one thing is for sure — it’s too expensive. I won’t get into the details here but what I found more interesting was this: “Politicians should indeed encourage investment in clean technologies, but direct subsidies are not the way to do it. A carbon price or tax, which raises the cost of emitting carbon dioxide while leaving it up to the private sector to pick technologies, is the better approach.” I agree.

On the back of yesterday’s unfortunate news, here’s a glance of what information it could have gathered…

Project Vulcan quantifies the CO2 emissions (2002) in the US using CO2 inventory data collected by the EPA. The data allows one to view the amounts of CO2 at a certain point in time, over time, AM/PM, etc. Check out the video/pres of this here. Using Google Earth (which is an awesome application by itself), you can choose to see the CO2 emissions by various categories (i.e. aircraft, commercial, electricity production, etc.) The project is funded by NASA/Department of Energy, in collaboration with researchers at Purdue University, Colorado State University and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

There is also another project in progress called Hestia which will try to quantify CO2 emissions for the entire planet Earth!

Imagine what all this data can do for our knowledge, carbon management strategies, international law and public policy.
